Many coins and artifacts were recovered from the Spanish ship Nuestra Senora de la Luz or La Luz as noted on the NGC holder. While anchored off the coast of Montevideo (Uruguay) in 1752, a storm sunk the ship and its payload to Davy Jones locker. The wreck was recovered between 1992-93, owned by the government of Uruguay, and auctioned off by Sotheby’s in 1993. This well preserved 8 Escudo was one of many examples recovered from the wreck. When this almost dead centered coin is turned at a slight angle : lustrous characteristics of these virtually immaculate surfaces create a slight cameo effect in unison with this superb striking. Slight hints of tone accentuate the slightly prooflike surfaces and the sharpness of the strike is highlighted. The centering, remarkable surfaces, sharp strike, and rich golden patina create masterful eye-appeal to view.
