Spanish Mint, c. 19-18 BC
rv DIVVS IVLIVS, comet.
Divus Julius issued depicting “Augustus’s Comet” or “Caesar’s Comet” on the reverse.
This is an actual depiction of Halley’s Comet which passed in 44BC, shortly after the assassination of Julius Caesar. Augustus claimed that the comet was the spirit of Caesar becoming a god.
A lovely example of this type, struck on a large format planchet allowing for all elements of the obverse and reverse dies.
A very attractive coin with old cabinet tone and good metal quality.
